Breast Cancer Prevention Project (founded by the Public Institution NEDELSK, a nonprofit organisation based and registered in Lithuania, reg. number: 303047766, reg. address: 4A M.K. Paco Street, Vilnius, Lithuania) is an important project that provides information and screenings for women in Lithuania, to help prevent breast cancer.
Each year breast cancer takes away approximately 40 thousand women’s lives all over the world. As many as five hundred such tragedies occur in the small Baltic country of Lithuania. Each year breast cancer changes the lives of one and a half thousand Lithuanian young ladies and women who are darlings, wives, mothers, sisters and daughters to somebody. Contrary to America or Western Europe where breast cancer prevention is paid great attention, Lithuanian women, especially residing in the province, referring to the doctors for consultation too late because of the lack of information – when the breast cancer has already spread its deadly claws. Since spring 2003 a “Pink Ribbon” bus sets out on a march throughout towns and villages of Lithuania where experienced specialists and doctors examine and consult women free of charge, whereas, in the case of suspicion of cancer symptoms, they refer them for further treatment.
An Early diagnosis which becomes the first step in the attempt to successfully overcome breast cancer is a very important part of the mission, but not the only one. Specialists of the “Pink Ribbon” bus carry out an educational mission, i.e. they train thousands of women how to check their breasts, what are the symptoms of breast cancer, where and what tests should be done.
